Scott J. Fowler

"VIRTUAL BROADWAY" is a painting containing impressionistic scenes and images from all sixty-nine theatrical productions mounted on Broadway during the 2002-2003 season.

Scott Fowler graduated with a B.A. in Design from Brigham Young University just as computer graphics arrived on the scene. His training came in the form of "hands on" designing and layout with Amber lights, black ink pens, and light boards. Working with these elements, his education grounded him with a solid understanding of the mechanics and fundamentals of good design. "I have learned to use the computer as a pencil, a paintbrush, and a canvas", Scott says. "Although design tools have changed, the elements of good design have remained constant-attention to balance, color, structure, and overall composition."

After college, his interests in theatre and acting took him to various parts of the country, and finally to New York City in 1993. He was inspired to paint "VIRTUAL BROADWAY" when he thought about the importance of commemorating Broadway's history. "I was actually influenced by the work of James Christensen and Gary Carter when I created "VIRTUAL BROADWAY". I knew I wanted to paint a montage, and Christianson works wonderfully in that way, while Carter is masterful at evoking historical scenes. I liked the idea of using impressionistic images, not only because they enhance the sense of fantasy, but also because I wanted to avoid trademark and copyright infringement issues of protected material. I live in the Times Square area, and it seems important that there be a permanent record of Broadway's entire season, so that those who love the theatre can remember what an extraordinary legacy Broadway has produced."

Fowler's past clients have included Robert Redford's Sundance Summer Theatre, the Oak Room at the renowned Algonquin Hotel, and Mamma Mia on Broadway. He also created a unique illustration for Planet Hollywood, a promotional piece which was distributed to CEO's throughout the New York City area. He is a member of professional design organizations, including the Graphic Artist Guild and the National Association of Photoshop Professionals. He heads his own illustration and graphic design studio in New York City, Acting Out Design.
